Penticton Airport Omni-Directional Approach Lighting System (ODALS) 16 Replacement project at Penticton Regional Airport (YYF).

This project, administered by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) on behalf of the Government of Canada, will modernize critical airfield lighting infrastructure supporting safe aircraft operations into Penticton.

Fun Fact:

An Omni-Directional Approach Lighting System (ODALS) helps pilots align with the runway during night operations and reduced visibility. The system typically consists of seven synchronized flashing light units extending outward from the runway threshold.

Unlike an Instrument Landing System (ILS), an ODALS provides visual guidance only—helping pilots quickly identify the runway environment and maintain proper alignment during the final approach.

These high-intensity flashing lights can often be seen from several kilometres away, significantly improving runway recognition and contributing to safer aircraft arrivals.

Every flash is engineered to improve situational awareness and enhance aviation safety.
